Ergocalciferol, also known as vitamin D2, is a white to off-white crystalline powder with the formula C28H44O and molecular weight 396.65 g/mol. It has a density of 0.96 g/cm³, melting point 114-118°C, boiling point 496.4°C at 760 mmHg, flash point 214.2°C, and refractive index 1.52. Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents like ethanol and chloroform, it is light-sensitive, oxidizing in air, and produced by UV irradiation of ergosterol from yeast or plants.
