Used in alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries as a depolarizer, in glass and ceramics as a colorant and decolorizer, and in wastewater treatment as an oxidant. Also serves as a catalyst in organic synthesis and chlorine production.

Inhalation of dust may cause irritation or chronic manganese exposure; use respiratory protection and handle in ventilated areas.
