Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC or carboxymethylcellulose sodium) is a white, odorless, hygroscopic powder derived from cellulose, with formula [C6H7O2(OH)2OCH2COONa]n and variable molecular weight (90,000-700,000 g/mol). Density 1.6 g/cm³, no fixed melting point (decomposes >300°C); forms viscous colloidal solutions in water, insoluble in organics. pH 6.5-8.5; degree of substitution 0.7-1.2 affects viscosity. Produced by reacting cellulose with chloroacetic acid and NaOH.

As thickener/emulsifier in food; binder in pharmaceuticals; viscosifier in oil drilling; in detergents, cosmetics, textiles for suspension and binding.

Safe, but dust irritates eyes/respiratory; incompatible with strong acids. Low explosion risk; GRAS by FDA, no consumer concerns in additives.

In 25kg multi-layer paper bags with PE or fiber drums. Store dry to prevent caking.
