TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a thermoplastic ester of cellulose with formula varying by substitution, molecular weight around 70,000 g/mol. It is a white powder or pellet, density 1.25 g/mL, melting point 127-240°C, refractive index 1.475, soluble in acetone and esters, insoluble in water. Produced by esterification of cellulose with acetic and butyric acids.
APPLICATIONS
Used in coatings for glossy lacquers, chemical-resistant fabrics, and automotive paints; in plastics for films and molds; in adhesives, inks, and as a binder in pharmaceuticals; in wire coatings and optical films for durability and flexibility.
SAFETY & RISKS
Low toxicity but dust may irritate eyes and respiratory tract; combustible, avoid heat sources. Stable under ambient conditions; incompatible with strong oxidizers causing fires. California Prop 65 warning for cancer risk; use PPE and ventilation.
PACKAGING
In 25kg bags or drums with secure closures; store in cool, dry areas; rinse triply for recycling or puncture packaging for landfill disposal.
