1,2-Benzenedicarboxaldehyde
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
1,2-Benzenedicarboxaldehyde, commonly known as o-Phthalaldehyde (OPA), is a high-level disinfectant and chemical intermediate. It is a yellow crystalline solid that provides rapid sterilization against a wide range of bacteria and spores.
As a Technical Grade reagent, it is widely used in analytical chemistry for the fluorometric detection of amino acids. Its high sensitivity and reactivity make it a staple in laboratory diagnostics and biochemical research.
In medical settings, OPA is a preferred alternative to glutaraldehyde for the disinfection of endoscopes and other heat-sensitive instruments. It offers a faster kill time and improved material compatibility for high-turnover medical equipment.
APPLICATIONS
- Medical Sterilization: Used as a 0.55% solution for the high-level disinfection of surgical and diagnostic instruments.
- Diagnostic Reagent: Employed in pre-column derivation for HPLC analysis of primary amines and amino acids.
- Chemical Intermediate: Acts as a precursor in the synthesis of specialized heterocyclic compounds and dyes.
SAFETY & RISKS
Classified as Toxic if Swallowed and a Skin Sensitizer. Can cause Severe Respiratory Irritation. Use in a Fume Hood with Respirator and Gloves.
