Sodium saccharin, the sodium salt of saccharin, is a white crystalline powder with formula C7H4NNaO3S·2H2O and molecular weight 241.20 g/mol. Density 0.83 g/cm³, melting point >300°C (decomposes); highly soluble in water (up to 670 g/L), sweet taste 300-500 times sucrose. Odorless, pH neutral to alkaline in solution; synthesized from toluene via sulfonation and oxidation.
Sodium Saccharin
Used as a non-nutritive sweetener in foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and animal feeds for calorie-free sweetness.
Safe with ADI 9 mg/kg bw/day; may cause allergic reactions or sensitivity. Non-toxic but monitor intake for high consumers.
