Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) is an odorless white powder or granules with formula Na4P2O7 and molecular weight 265.90 g/mol. Density 2.53 g/cm³, melting point 988°C, highly soluble in water (3.16 g/100mL cold, 40.26 g/100mL boiling), alkaline pH; hydrated form Na4P2O7·10H2O loses water at 93.8°C.

Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate (TSPP)

Used as buffering/emulsifier/dispersing/thickening agent in food (chicken nuggets, pudding, crab meat, canned tuna, soy meats, cat food); tartar control in toothpaste/floss; ionic dispersant for low viscous solutions; electroactive media for exfoliation in batteries; wool de-fatting, bleaching, water treatment, laundry/metal cleaning; in poultry scalding.

Corrosive, causes burns/eye damage/irritation; toxicity twice table salt orally; hydrolyzes to phosphate/sodium ions; may lead to environmental eutrophication issues. Avoid acids/metals; stable but light-sensitive; Hazard Class 8; prolonged exposure causes respiratory problems.

Supplied in 50 lb kraft paper bags with polyethylene moisture barriers or 2000 lb bulk bags for industrial shipments, as detailed in Brenntag product info.
