Sodium Hexanoate
Sodium hexanoate, also known as sodium caproate, is a white crystalline powder with formula C6H11NaO2 and molecular weight 138.14 g/mol. It is soluble in water and ethanol, with a faint fatty odor, pH alkaline in solution, and derived from hexanoic acid neutralization. Stable under normal conditions but hygroscopic.
Sodium Hexanoate
Used in synthesis of biodegradable biopolymers, food as a flavoring agent, pharmaceuticals for drug delivery, and in cosmetics as an emulsifier; also in animal feed additives and chemical intermediates for esters.
Irritant to skin and eyes; may cause respiratory issues if inhaled. Combustible; avoid strong oxidizers to prevent reactions. Low toxicity but handled with PPE; stable but decomposes on heating emitting acrid smoke.
In 25kg drums or bags with PE liners; store in cool, dry places; rinse triply for recycling or puncture for landfill disposal.
