Cetearyl alcohol, also known as cetostearyl alcohol, is a white waxy solid mixture of cetyl (C16) and stearyl (C18) alcohols, formula C16H34O/C18H38O, molecular weight average 258-270 g/mol. Melting point around 50°C, insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and oils; produced from fatty acids.

Cetearyl Alcohol

Used as emulsifier and thickener in cosmetics like creams and lotions; in pharmaceuticals for ointments; in personal care for hair conditioners and body washes; in industrial lubricants and textiles for softening.

Generally safe for topical use; may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Combustible; avoid open flames and strong oxidizers. Low toxicity but wear protective gear to prevent eye contact.

Supplied in 25kg bags or drums; store away from heat; use alcohol-resistant foam for fires; dispose rinsed in landfills.
