Sodium lignosulfonate, a derivative of lignin from wood pulping, is a light tan to brown amorphous powder with formula C20H24Na2O10S2 (approximate) and average molecular weight 5,000-52,000 g/mol. It has a density of 0.5-0.7 g/cm³, pH 7-11 in solution, and is highly soluble in water but insoluble in organics. Non-hygroscopic, it decomposes above 200°C without melting and has a slight odor; produced as a byproduct of sulfite pulping.

Used as a dispersant in pigments, water treatment, concrete admixtures, and binders in ceramics; stabilizer for emulsions, tanning agent, and in agriculture for soil improvement.

Low toxicity; may irritate eyes or skin as dust, inhalation hazard considered. Non-flammable; avoid strong oxidizers. Generally regarded as safe with proper handling.

Available in 25kg bags or big bags with polyethylene liners; for disposal, incinerate with flue gas scrubbing or recycle rinsed containers.
