Trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM), also known as tri(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate, is a clear, almost colorless to pale yellow viscous oily liquid with the formula C30H54O6 and molecular weight 546.78 g/mol. It has a density of 0.99 g/cm³, boiling point around 414°C, flash point >240°C (closed cup), refractive index 1.485, and viscosity 190-220 mPa·s at 20°C. Insoluble in water but miscible with organic solvents like ethanol and acetone, it has low odor and volatility, stable under normal conditions but decomposes at high temperatures. Produced by esterification of trimellitic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol, it serves as a high-performance plasticizer.

Trioctyl Trimellitate

Primarily used as a plasticizer for PVC in wire/cable insulation, automotive interiors, medical tubing, and flooring for heat resistance and low volatility; in adhesives, coatings, and inks for flexibility; in lubricants as additive; in rubber for processing aid; in research for polymer studies; in food-contact materials as approved by FDA.

Low acute toxicity with LD50 oral >5000 mg/kg (rat); mild irritant to eyes/skin/respiratory (H315, H319, H335); not classified as hazardous by GHS but combustible—avoid ignition sources (H227). Incompatible with strong oxidizers; decomposes to COx on heating. Use PPE, ventilate; no carcinogenic effects but monitor chronic exposure.

Typically packaged in 200kg or 1000kg iron drums/IBC totes with epoxy lining for corrosion resistance; store in cool, dry, ventilated areas away from heat/oxidizers per SDS guidelines.
