Used in pharmaceuticals as a diuretic, bulking agent, and excipient for tablets and lyophilized formulations. In food, it serves as a low-calorie sweetener, and in cosmetics, it acts as a humectant and stabilizer. Industrial uses include cryoprotectants and laboratory reagents.

Non-toxic; excessive intake may cause mild laxative effects. Store in dry, moisture-free conditions.
