Lanthanum Triflate (La(CF₃SO₃)₃; MW 586.11) is a rare earth triflate salt presenting as a white to light beige crystalline powder, freely soluble in water. Commercially available at purities of 98 %–99.9 % (La₂O₃/TREO basis), it functions as a water-tolerant Lewis acid catalyst with high thermal stability, retaining activity above 300 °C.
Its ionic character and strong electrophilicity make it effective across a broad range of organic synthesis and polymerisation research applications. SoleChem supplies Lanthanum Triflate in quantities from 5 g laboratory lots up to kilogram-scale orders available on request.

Applications
- Pharma & Healthcare: Employed as a Lewis acid promoter in Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation reactions, enabling selective C–C bond formation under mild, aqueous-compatible conditions.
- Pharma & Healthcare: Used as a catalyst in aldol condensation sequences for the construction of β-hydroxy carbonyl intermediates relevant to active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis.
- Pharma & Healthcare: Applied in Diels-Alder cycloadditions as a water-stable activator of dienophiles, improving reaction rate and endo/exo selectivity.
- Pharma & Healthcare: Serves as an esterification catalyst in the preparation of ester-functional intermediates where conventional Brønsted acid catalysts are incompatible with sensitive substrates.
- Plastics & Polymers: Investigated as a rare earth initiator or co-catalyst in polymerisation research programmes targeting controlled chain-growth and stereoregular polymer architectures.
Safety & Risks
Classified Danger (GHS). H314 causes severe skin burns and eye damage; H315 skin irritant; H319 serious eye irritation; H335 may cause respiratory irritation. Use chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and a P100 respirator in dust-generating operations. Store sealed in a cool, dry location.
Packaging
Typical supply: 1–5 kg sealed containers for laboratory grades; 25 kg fibre drums for bulk technical grade. Kilogram-scale orders available on request. Store away from moisture.
