Mono Calcium Phosphate (MCP), also known as calcium dihydrogen phosphate, is a white granular or crystalline powder with the formula Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O and a molecular weight of 252.07 g/mol. This Food Grade phosphate is highly soluble in water (18 g/100 mL at 30°C), giving a slightly acidic solution of pH 3-4.
Its primary role is as a fast-acting leavening agent in baking powders and self-raising flours, where it reacts with sodium bicarbonate to release carbon dioxide. It also serves as a calcium and phosphorus fortifier in beverages, dairy products, and dietary supplements.
In animal nutrition, MCP is a highly bioavailable feed phosphate supporting bone development and growth in poultry, swine, and aquaculture. The compound is obtained by reacting calcium carbonate with phosphoric acid and is hygroscopic, so dry storage is essential.

Applications

Safety & Risks
Nonhazardous per GHS but avoid dust causing eye/respiratory irritation; prolonged exposure may lead to skin dryness. Low toxicity LD50 oral (rat) >5000 mg/kg; non-combustible but decomposes to phosphorus oxides at high heat. Incompatible with strong bases; use PPE, ventilate; no carcinogenic effects.
Packaging
Typically in 25kg multi-wall paper bags with PE liners or 50kg fiber drums to prevent moisture; store tightly closed in cool, dry areas; empty containers retain residue—do not reuse, dispose per local regulations.
