Silicon Dioxide (CAS 7631-86-9), also known as silica, is a white amorphous powder that occurs naturally or is produced synthetically, and it is used as a reinforcing filler in rubber and paints, as an anti-caking agent in food and as an adsorbent in cosmetics. Insoluble in water, high melting point 1710°C; occurs naturally or synthetically produced.

Applications

Used as anti-caking agent in food, filler in pharmaceuticals, adsorbent in cosmetics, and in paints, rubber, and electronics for reinforcement; also in water filtration and chromatography.

Safety & Risks

May cause silicosis from chronic inhalation; irritates eyes and skin. California Prop 65 cancer warning; avoid dust formation. Stable but releases silicon oxides in fires; Hazard Class varies.
