Sodium Chlorate (CAS 7775-09-9) is an inorganic chlorate salt that appears as a white, odorless, hygroscopic crystalline solid, valued as a strong oxidizer and used in pulp and paper bleaching via chlorine dioxide generation, in agriculture as a herbicide and defoliant, and in water treatment. Density 2.49 g/cm³, melting point 248°C, decomposes above 300°C releasing oxygen. Highly soluble in water (790 g/L at 0°C), slightly in alcohols; pH neutral. Strong oxidizer; produced electrolytically from NaCl. Forms dihydrate or tetrahydrate in humid conditions.
