Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) is a clear pale pink or yellow-green liquid with formula C4H12ClO4P and molecular weight 190.56 g/mol. Density 1.341 g/mL at 25°C, highly soluble in water, used as organophosphorus salt; decomposes on heating releasing POx, HCl, bis(chloromethyl)ether; formed from phosphine, formaldehyde, HCl.

Applications
Used as flame retardant for textiles, plastics, paper; precursor to fire-retardant materials; reducing agent/stabilizing ligand for gold nanoparticles synthesis; cross-linker for 3D cell encapsulation in hydrogels; in disinfection of cooling towers; antioxidant for oxygen scavenging in polymer gel dosimeters; in leather tanning processes.
