Tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPAB) is a white to off-white crystalline solid with formula C12H28BrN and molecular weight 266.26 g/mol. Melting point 266-272°C, density 1.4 g/cm³, highly soluble in water, weakly acidic solutions; quaternary ammonium salt, hygroscopic, incompatible with strong oxidizers.

Applications

Used as phase-transfer catalyst in organic synthesis; ion-pair agent in chromatography; surface-active agent, solvent, intermediate, conditioner, antistatic, detergent sanitizer, softener for textiles/paper, antimicrobial, disinfectant, slimicidal/emulsifying agent, pigment disperser; structure-directing agent in zeolite synthesis.
