Trisodium dicarboxymethyl alaninate, also known as MGDA-Na3 or trisodium methylglycine diacetate, is a white to off-white powder or granules with the formula C7H8NNa3O6 and molecular weight 271.11 g/mol. It has a density of 0.69 g/cm³ (powder) or 1.31 g/cm³ (40% solution), highly soluble in water forming clear solutions, but insoluble in most organics. Odorless with pH 10-12 in solution, it is a biodegradable chelating agent produced as an eco-friendly alternative to EDTA, effective for binding hard water ions like calcium and magnesium.

Trisodium Dicarboxymethyl Alaninate

Used as a chelating agent in detergents for water softening and scale prevention; in industrial cleaners for metal ion control; in personal care products as stabilizer; in water treatment to inhibit corrosion; in agriculture for nutrient delivery; in food as sequestrant (GRAS listed).

Low toxicity with excellent toxicological profile; mild skin irritant—avoid contact, rinse with water if exposed. Non-carcinogenic, biodegradable, and eco-friendly; no danger labeling required.
