Scandium Chloride Hexahydrate (ScCl₃·6H₂O; MW 259.41) is a white, water-soluble crystalline rare earth salt of scandium(III), melting at 63–66 °C. It is commercially available in purities from 99.9 % to 99.999 % REO basis, supplied as the hexahydrate; the anhydrous form (CAS 10361-84-9, argon-packed) is a related product.

As a highly soluble scandium source, it serves as a direct precursor to electrolytic scandium metal and to coordination compounds such as scandium triflate and scandium acetylacetonate. Its water tolerance makes it the preferred scandium feedstock for aqueous Lewis acid catalysis and for sol-gel routes targeting scandium-stabilised zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte materials.

Scandium Chloride Hexahydrate

Applications
  • Mining & Metals: Primary electrolytic precursor for the production of high-purity scandium metal and master alloys via molten-salt reduction routes.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Starting material for ScSZ sol-gel synthesis used in solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte fabrication requiring high ionic conductivity.
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Dopant precursor for electroceramic and laser crystal formulations; used in optical fibre manufacturing where controlled scandium incorporation modifies refractive index.
  • Pharma & Healthcare: Precursor to water-tolerant Lewis acid catalysts—scandium triflate and scandium acetylacetonate—employed in aqueous-phase organic synthesis and process chemistry.
  • Mining & Metals: Reagent-grade source for preparation of scandium oxide coatings and specialty scandium compounds in research and pilot-scale metallurgical processing.
Safety & Risks

Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Handle as a general laboratory salt; avoid dust generation. Store in a cool, dry location in tightly sealed containers. Use gloves and safety glasses as standard laboratory precautions.

Packaging

1–5 kg bottles for high-purity lots; larger quantities available on request. Store sealed, away from moisture.
