Neodymium Nitrate Hexahydrate (Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O; MW 438.35 g/mol) is a rare earth nitrate salt presenting as purple, water-soluble crystals with a melting point of 69–71 °C and a density of 2.26 g/cm³. It is also soluble in alcohol. Commercially available material is quoted at TREO ≥ 37–38 % with Nd₂O₃/TREO reaching 99 %–99.9 %, spanning 2N to 4N grades; related forms include the anhydrous salt (CAS 10045-95-1) and 30–50 % aqueous solution.
The compound serves as a primary neodymium source across catalyst impregnation, specialty glass, advanced ceramics, and precursor chemistry. Its high solubility and controlled nitrate decomposition profile make it well suited to solution-phase processing routes where precise Nd loading and uniform distribution are required.

Applications
- Electronics & Solar PV: Used as a solution-phase precursor in sol-gel routes yielding Nd₂O₃ thin films and dielectric ceramic formulations for capacitor and substrate applications.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Applied in the preparation of Nd:YAG laser glass and optical glass compositions requiring a controlled, high-purity neodymium nitrate feedstock.
- Automotive: Employed in catalyst impregnation studies for exhaust after-treatment systems and as a neodymium dopant source in solid oxide fuel cell electrode research.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Incorporated into rare earth catalyst impregnation processes for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units to enhance thermal stability and selectivity.
- Building & Construction: Utilized in glass-coloring formulations to impart characteristic purple-violet tints in architectural and specialty glass products.
- Automotive: Serves as a neodymium source in the synthesis of Nd-based butadiene rubber (Nd-BR) catalyst precursors used in high-performance tire compound development.
Safety & Risks
GHS Danger: oxidising solid (UN 1477, Class 5.1); H272, H315, H319, H335. Wear chemical-splash goggles, nitrile gloves, and dust/mist respirator. Store away from combustibles and reducing agents in a cool, dry, ventilated area.
Packaging
25 kg fiber or plastic drums; IBC containers for bulk solution grades; 1–5 kg sealed bags for high-purity lots. Store dry, away from heat.
