Dysprosium Oxide (Dy₂O₃; MW 373 g/mol) is a white, high-density rare earth oxide (density 8.17 g/cm³) that is insoluble in water and stable to its melting point of 2 360 °C. It is commercially available as a fine powder and nanopowder at purities from 99 % to 99.99 % expressed on a total rare earth oxide basis (Dy₂O₃/TREO).
Its principal function is as a coercivity-enhancing additive in high-performance permanent magnet alloys and as a neutron-absorbing material in nuclear applications. SoleChem supplies Technical Grade and Electronic Grade material to customers across the electronics, automotive, and energy sectors.
Dysprosium Oxide
Applications
- Electronics & Solar PV: Added to NdFeB sintered magnets as a grain-boundary dopant to raise coercivity and extend operating temperature range in motors and actuators.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Used in the fabrication of Dy:YAG laser crystals and phosphor components requiring a controlled rare earth dopant with defined optical absorption bands.
- Automotive: Incorporated into high-coercivity NdFeB magnets for traction motors and power-steering systems where elevated thermal stability is required.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Employed as a neutron-absorbing control-rod material in nuclear reactor designs owing to its high neutron-capture cross-section.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Serves as a glass additive in halogen lamp envelopes and specialty optical glass formulations to modify transmission and thermal properties.
Safety & Risks
Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Handle as a fine inorganic powder: use dust mask (FFP2/N95), safety glasses, and gloves. Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry location away from moisture.
Packaging
Typical supply: 1–5 kg foil-sealed bags for high-purity lots; 25 kg fibre drums; 500–1 000 kg big bags for bulk oxide grades.
