Lanthanum Hydroxide (La(OH)₃; MW 189.93) is a white, fine powder rare earth compound that is insoluble in water but readily dissolves in strong acids. Commercially available at purities from 2N to 5N (La₂O₃/TREO ≥ 99 %–99.999 %) with TREO ≥ 65 %, it is supplied in −200 and −325 mesh particle sizes and carries a loss on ignition (LOI) of 13–15 %.

As a highly reactive lanthanum source, it serves as a key intermediate for the synthesis of lanthanum salts, oxides, and specialty compounds across catalyst, ceramic, glass, and electronics manufacturing. Its strong affinity for phosphate, arsenate, and fluoride ions makes it the preferred lanthanum form for selective anion adsorption in acidic aqueous systems.

Lanthanum Hydroxide

Applications
  • Water & Wastewater Treatment: Applied as a selective adsorbent for phosphate, arsenate, and fluoride removal from acidic municipal and industrial effluents, outperforming many conventional lanthanum forms under low-pH conditions.
  • Automotive: Used as a raw material in the preparation of three-way catalyst (TWC) formulations, where lanthanum stabilises the alumina support and enhances high-temperature durability.
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Serves as a precursor for lanthanum hexaboride (LaB₆) cathodes and rare-earth phosphors used in display and lighting applications.
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Converted to high-purity lanthanum oxide for use in optical glass, ceramic dielectrics, and thin-film coatings in solar cell manufacturing.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Functions as a catalyst carrier precursor and lanthanum salt intermediate in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) additive production and refinery catalyst systems.
Safety & Risks

Classified Danger under GHS; H314 (causes severe skin and eye burns), H318 (serious eye damage). Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Use chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and acid-resistant protective clothing. Store in sealed containers away from acids.

Packaging

25 kg polyethylene-lined fiber drums or woven bags; 500–1,000 kg big bags for bulk orders; 1–5 kg sealed containers for high-purity lots. Store dry.
