Lanthanum Acetate Hydrate (C₆H₁₁LaO₇; MW 334.05) is a white crystalline rare earth salt supplied as the sesquihydrate (CAS 25721-92-0); an anhydrous form (CAS 917-70-4) and aqueous solution are also commercially available. The hydrated salt dissolves readily in water (16.88 g/100 mL at 25 °C), melts at 110 °C, and has a density of 1.640 g/cm³. Commercially available grades range from 3N to 4N purity on a rare earth oxide basis, with total rare earth oxide (TREO) content typically 40–45 % in the hydrated form.

As an acetate-based lanthanum precursor, this compound decomposes cleanly on calcination, leaving no halide or sulfate residues in the final oxide — a property that makes it the preferred starting material for sol-gel processing, perovskite ceramic synthesis, and catalyst impregnation routes where anion contamination must be minimised. SoleChem supplies Technical Grade and Electronic Grade material to customers in the oil and gas, electronics, and water treatment sectors.

Lanthanum Acetate Hydrate

Applications
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Used as a high-purity lanthanum source in sol-gel deposition of lanthanum oxide dielectric layers and as a precursor for perovskite electrode materials (LSM, LSCF) in solid oxide fuel cell fabrication.
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Electronic Grade lots serve as dopant precursors in thin-film and semiconductor processes where halide-free, low-sulfate lanthanum input is required.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Applied in catalyst impregnation to introduce lanthanum onto alumina or zeolite supports, stabilising surface area at elevated operating temperatures in refinery and combustion catalysts.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Functions as a calcination precursor for lanthanum-modified mixed-oxide catalysts used in steam reforming and partial oxidation processes.
  • Water & Wastewater Treatment: Incorporated into phosphate-removal formulations; lanthanum ions precipitate orthophosphate selectively, supporting compliance with discharge limits in municipal and industrial effluent treatment.
Safety & Risks

Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Handle as a nuisance dust; ensure adequate ventilation and avoid prolonged inhalation of fine particles. Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves as standard laboratory precautions. Store in a cool, dry location away from strong acids.

Packaging

Supplied in 1–5 kg sealed polyethylene bags for high-purity lots and 25 kg fibre drums for technical-grade quantities. Store sealed, away from moisture.
