Yttrium Sulfate Octahydrate (Y₂(SO₄)₃·8H₂O; MW 610.12) is a white to pale yellow crystalline rare earth salt with a density of 2.56 g/mL at 25 °C. It is sparingly soluble in water — solubility decreasing with rising temperature — and loses its eight waters of crystallisation at 120 °C, decomposing above 700 °C. The related anhydrous form is registered under CAS 13510-71-9.
Commercially available in purities from 2N to 5N on a rare earth oxide basis (Y₂O₃/TREO ≥ 99.9 %; TREO content of the hydrated salt typically quoted in the 44–46 % range), it serves as a key intermediate in rare earth separation and as a direct precursor to yttrium oxide, phosphors, and catalyst formulations. SoleChem supplies Technical and Electronic grades to industrial buyers.

Applications
- Electronics & Solar PV: Used as a high-purity yttrium source in the synthesis of yttrium-based phosphors for LED and display applications, where controlled stoichiometry is critical.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Serves as a precursor in the preparation of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells and thin-film deposition processes.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Functions as a catalyst precursor and rare earth separation intermediate in refinery and hydroprocessing workflows requiring high-purity yttrium compounds.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Applied in the formulation of thermally stable catalyst supports where yttrium doping improves resistance to sintering at elevated operating temperatures.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Utilised in glass and ceramic formulations as a yttrium oxide precursor, contributing to refractive-index adjustment and thermal-shock resistance in specialty optical components.
Safety & Risks
Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Handle crystalline powder with standard laboratory precautions: use dust mask, safety glasses, and gloves. Store in a cool, dry location in tightly sealed containers away from alkaline materials.
Packaging
Supplied in 1–5 kg sealed containers for Electronic Grade lots; 25 kg fibre drums for Technical Grade. Store sealed, away from moisture.
