Scandium Acetate Hydrate (Sc(CH₃COO)₃·xH₂O; MW 222.09 g/mol) is a water-soluble rare earth acetate salt supplied as a white to off-white powder, crystals, or chunks. Commercially available at purities of Sc₂O₃/TREO ≥ 99.9 %, with TREO content of the hydrated salt quoted per typical specifications; the related anhydrous form is registered under CAS 3804-23-7.

Its high purity and controlled solubility make it a preferred precursor compound for solution-based processing routes. It serves as a direct feedstock for sol-gel synthesis of scandium-stabilised zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte materials, metal–organic framework (MOF) construction, and thin-film deposition, where precise stoichiometric control of scandium content is required.

Scandium Acetate Hydrate

Applications
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Used as a high-purity scandium precursor in sol-gel processing of ScSZ solid electrolyte layers for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and related thin-film ceramic components.
  • Electronics & Solar PV: Serves as a solution-processable scandium source for thin-film deposition techniques where uniform elemental distribution at the nanoscale is critical.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Applied as a catalyst precursor in the preparation of scandium-containing heterogeneous catalysts for refining and energy conversion processes.
  • Oil, Gas & Energy: Utilised in MOF synthesis as a scandium node-forming reagent, yielding porous coordination frameworks with potential gas storage and separation functions.
  • Pharma & Healthcare: Employed in fine-chemical and research-scale synthesis as a defined-purity scandium salt for coordination chemistry and formulation development.
Safety & Risks

Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Handle powder with standard laboratory precautions: use Safety Glasses, Gloves, and adequate ventilation to minimise dust exposure. Store in a cool, dry location in tightly sealed containers.

Packaging

1–5 kg sealed polyethylene bags or glass/HDPE bottles for high-purity lots; 25 kg fibre drums available for larger quantities. Store away from moisture.
