Yttrium Chloride Hexahydrate (YCl₃·6H₂O; MW 303.36) is a water-soluble rare earth salt presenting as white adhering crystals or crystalline powder, with a density of 2.18 g/mL at 25 °C and high aqueous solubility (217 g/100 mL at 20 °C). It is commercially available in 3N–5N purity grades, with Y₂O₃/TREO ≥ 99.9 % on a rare earth oxide basis; the TREO content of the salt itself is typically in the 44–45 % range.
As the principal water-soluble yttrium source in industrial and advanced-material processing, it functions as a versatile precursor across phosphor synthesis, superconductor coating routes, sol-gel formulations, and metallurgical conversion. A related anhydrous form (CAS 10361-92-9, argon-packed) is available separately for electrolysis and strictly moisture-free laboratory applications.

Applications
- Electronics & Solar PV: Precursor for YAG:Ce phosphor production used in LED lighting packages and yttrium–aluminium garnet laser gain media, as well as a solution-phase starting material for yttrium iron garnet (YIG) microwave filter components.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Solution-phase precursor for YBCO high-temperature superconductor coatings deposited via chemical solution deposition (CSD) routes.
- Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers: Readily soluble, high-purity yttrium source for sol-gel coating formulations requiring controlled hydrolysis; also incorporated into barrier and corrosion-resistant coating systems at the precursor stage.
- Mining & Metals: Intermediate for the production of metallic yttrium and for conversion to other yttrium salts or oxides in downstream refining operations.
- Pharma & Healthcare: Synthesis raw material for radiopharmaceutical chelate intermediates and organoyttrium compounds; buyers should specify purity tier and in-house testing requirements.
- Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers: Lewis acid catalyst in selected ring-opening and fine-chemical reactions, typically at modest process scale.
