Cerium Nitrate Hexahydrate (Ce(NO₃)₃·6H₂O; MW 434.22) is a water-soluble rare earth salt supplied as colorless to white crystalline powder or agglomerating crystals. It dissolves readily in water, alcohol, and acetone, with a melting point of 96 °C. Purity is quoted on a rare earth oxide basis; commercially available specifications include TREO ≥ 99 % through TREO ≥ 99.99 %, with CeO₂/TREO values reflecting cerium content of the hydrated salt.
Its primary industrial function is as a cerium(III) precursor for the synthesis of cerium-zirconium mixed oxides used in catalyst washcoats, and as a solution-processable source of cerium for corrosion-inhibiting coatings and CeO₂ nanoparticle production. The anhydrous form (CAS 10108-73-3) is a related grade available for applications requiring reduced moisture content.

Applications
- Automotive: Precursor to Ce–Zr mixed oxide washcoat formulations for three-way catalytic converters, providing the oxygen-storage component in emission-control systems.
- Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers: Used in corrosion-inhibiting primer and conversion coating formulations as a chromate-replacement additive and cerium-based pigment.
- Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers: Solution-phase precursor for the hydrothermal or precipitation synthesis of CeO₂ nanoparticles incorporated into functional coatings.
- Home Care & Industrial Cleaning: Employed in ceramic and glass surface-treatment formulations where a soluble cerium source is required at the processing stage.
- Pharma & Healthcare: Serves as a cerium(III) starting material in the preparation of active pharmaceutical intermediates, including cerium-containing burn-treatment compounds.
Safety & Risks
Classified Danger: oxidising solid (transport class 5.1); serious eye damage (H318); skin and eye irritation (H315, H319); very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H400, H410). Store away from combustibles in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Use chemical splash goggles, gloves, and dust respirator.
Packaging
10 kg and 50 kg fiber or iron drums (industrial); 1–5 kg laboratory bottles for high-purity lots. Store sealed, dry, away from heat.
