Yttrium Nitrate Hexahydrate (Y(NO₃)₃·6H₂O; MW 383.01) is a water-soluble rare earth salt supplied as white adhering crystals or crystalline powder, melting point 51.8 °C, density 2.682 g/mL at 25 °C. Commercially available in Technical and Electronic Grades from 2N8 to 5N purity on a rare earth oxide basis, with TREO content of the hexahydrate typically ≥ 29 %.
Its high solubility makes it a preferred wet-chemistry precursor for sol-gel synthesis of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) and Y₂O₃ coatings, phosphor hosts, and YBCO superconductor powders. Related anhydrous (CAS 10361-93-0) and tetrahydrate (CAS 13773-69-8) forms are also commercially available for process-specific requirements.

Applications
- Electronics & Solar PV: Sol-gel and wet-chemical precursor for high-purity Y₂O₃ and YSZ thin-film coatings, and for YAG:Ce and Y₂O₃:Eu phosphor synthesis used in display and lighting applications.
- Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers: Starting material for yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier and protective coatings deposited via sol-gel or spray-pyrolysis routes.
- Oil, Gas & Energy: Powder precursor for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte synthesis and rare earth washcoat additive formulations in high-temperature energy systems.
- Automotive: Rare earth dopant source for catalytic converter washcoat preparation, contributing to thermal stabilisation of alumina and ceria-based catalyst supports.
- Pharma & Healthcare: High-purity Electronic Grade lots serve as a controlled yttrium source in research-scale synthesis of YBCO and other functional inorganic materials.
- Electronics & Solar PV: Lewis acid catalyst precursor in fine-chemical and R&D synthesis routes requiring a soluble, readily decomposable yttrium salt.
Safety & Risks
Not classified as hazardous under GHS. Classified as an oxidising solid (UN 1477, Class 5.1); store away from organic materials and reducing agents. Use gloves, safety glasses, and adequate ventilation when handling bulk quantities.
Packaging
Typical supply: 500 g–1 kg jars for high-purity lots; 25 kg UN-approved drums for technical grades. Store in a cool, dry location away from combustibles.
