Sodium metasilicate, also called sodium silicate, is a white crystalline powder with formula Na2SiO3 (anhydrous) or Na2SiO3·5H2O (pentahydrate) and molecular weight 122.06 g/mol (anhydrous). Density 2.4 g/cm³, melting point 1089°C; highly soluble in water forming alkaline solutions (pH 12-13), insoluble in alcohols. Hygroscopic, it decomposes in acids releasing silica; produced by fusing sodium carbonate with silica.
