Sodium sulfide is a yellow to red flake or powder with formula Na2S and molecular weight 78.04 g/mol. Density 1.86 g/cm³, melting point 950°C; soluble in water releasing H2S, strong rotten egg odor. Hygroscopic; produced by reducing sodium sulfate with carbon.
